Working with young people in the Technology Centre at the University of Amsterdam fires my obsession with gadgets and electronic devices on two fronts.  Firstly it is, after all, a technology centre, and technology is what it is all about.  Here students use and explore all manner of equipment and developments in the furtherance of their studies, and inevitably I witness the work they do in my capacity as a Teaching Assistant.

Secondly, as young people they in any event are much more familiar with gadgetry as part of their everyday lives than those of us who are a little older, and who spent much of our upbringing without the benefit of home computers and smartphones.

Seeing them from day to day using and embracing technology as though it were the most natural thing in the world has perhaps not surprisingly rubbed off on me.  In my job I have to help teach them so it was always going to be the case that I would gather some technological know-how of my own along the way.  The more I witnessed the more I wanted to be a part of it all and the rest, as they say, is history.

One thing led to another, and in 2008 I decided to set up a blog devoted entirely to gadgets and electronics.  As it grows I am keen to recruit other writers to contribute articles from their own perspectives.  If you would like to be one of those contributors please simply send me your submission by e-mail at [email protected] or by filling out the contact form below.  But, before doing so, I’d be grateful if you would first just take note of the following:

What Should I Write About and What are the Guidelines?

Ideally articles should be in the region of 600-800 words long, and can either be published under the writer’s name and byline or, if preferred, completely anonymously.  If you do wish to be identified please just include a short bio and a good quality photograph.  As far as the subject of your article goes – well, I’m pretty easy.  But the blog is about technology and gadgets and so then, obviously, should your article be.  It needs to have some relevance or obvious connection to the theme of the website.

With over a thousand visitors each month this obviously provides donors with an opportunity to generate backlinks, as well as publicity.  Apart from correcting any typos or grammar, and so long as nothing in the content is inappropriate, I won’t alter or abridge anybody’s contribution – it is your work!

Some Suggested Topics

Your article is your own – I won’t meddle with it just so long as it is not off-subject.  But some angles you may wish to consider are:

  • Using social media for leisure and for business
  • Technology in the kitchen and around the home
  • How gadgets assist you in your work
  • How has technology changed your life?
  • In which ways will technological developments impact on the future?
  • Computers and the internet
